Performance
Standards and Animal Welfare: Definition, Application and Assessment Parts - I & II
addresses the definition, development and evaluation of
performance standards in research animal facilities. Performance Standards Part I and II
are based on SCAW conferences held in Baltimore in 1997 and 1998.
The Well-being of Animals in Zoo and Aquarium Sponsored Research covers how research concerns different in zoos and aquariums, ethical considerations for conservation research, trends in environmental enrichment in zoos and aquariums, and the role of the IACUC at zoos and aquariums. Human/Research Animal Relationship concerns history of the Human/Animal Relationship, research staff perspectives, animal care staff perspectives, coping with burnout, and how human/animal bonding affects the animals. Wildlife Mammals as Research Models: In the Laboratory and Field outlines wildlife management in the laboratory, control of fertility and monitoring ovarian function, marking, trapping, and the use of positive reinforcement. Research Animal Anesthesia, Analgesia and Surgery covers regulatory requirements, guidelines, xenotransplantation, pain and distress, anesthesia and analgesia use in a variety of animals, and cardiopulmonary procedures. Rodents and Rabbits: Current Research Issues topics covered are: recognizing stress, requests for changes in USDA regulations by HSUS, enrichment techniques, aseptic surgery, anesthesia and analgesia. The Care and Use of Amphibians, Reptiles and Fish in Research discusses the care and use of fish, amphibians and reptiles. These species are used as important research models in many different biomedical disciplines, yet little has been written about their humane and responsible care in a research environment. This book also discusses areas in field research, housing and handling, anesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia for different species of fish. The Well-Being of Agricultural Animals in Biomedical and Agricultural Research focuses on current and future USDA regulations for agricultural research animals, animal behavior, care and management and Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) responsibilities.
