Invitation from SCAW Board of Trustees
Dear Colleague:
The Board of Directors of the Scientist Center for Animal Welfare (SCAW) invite you and your organization to become an Institutional member of SCAW. The Scientist Center for Animal Welfare is a non-profit professional society of biomedical research professionals dedicated to balancing lab animal welfare and excellence in basic and applied scientific research.
As a member of the research community your continued participation with SCAW is a clear demonstration of your continued commitment to programs that promote lab animal welfare, research integrity, high quality scientific data and excellence in animal based scientific research. Your membership will provide the means for SCAW to continue our sponsorship for educational meetings and conferences on the ethical issues “of the day”, related to the responsible and humane use of animals in research, testing and teaching.
As you know, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (ACUC) are specifically mandated by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and by PHS policy to oversee the welfare, care and use of animals in research, testing and teaching. Both the AWA and PHS policy specifically state that investigators and IACUC members must be trained in basic animal science, and in the workings of the IACUC. Without such training, society cannot be assured of high quality, ethical animal science in the research community.
SCAW workshops and conferences are valuable to your animal research program because they provide excellent advanced training opportunities for your investigators, IACUC members and staff. Our programs enable them to be up-to-date with the latest thinking from academic and government experts in the field. In addition, SCAW conferences are small regional forums that provide excellent cost effective networking opportunities for attendees.
Please take a moment NOW, to join SCAW by completing the enclosed membership form or if you prefer, go to Institutional Membership for online registration. Also check out the SCAW membership list and the benefits of membership enclosed or at https:/scaw.com.
Your membership contributions to SCAW are vitally important for us to continue our critically acclaimed service to the biomedical research community. Thank you for your generosity.
Sincerely,

Programs and Services
SCAW IACUC Training Workshops are one-day workshops created by SCAW to train members of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs) and others involved with research animals. Training is recommended by USDA guidelines, PHS policy and AAALAC guidelines. The format lets small groups discuss specific, complex topics that are relevant to IACUC functions. Please visit the SCAW website for more information on upcoming workshops.
SCAW also sponsors an Annual Winter Conference each year. SCAW will continue to be a major source for fulfilling the training requirements stated in USDA/APHIS/AC Policy 15 that states ”IACUC members should be trained in understanding the Animal Welfare Act, protocol review and facility inspections.”
SCAW Institutional Members have access to voice over PowerPoints recordings as part of SCAW Institutional Membership, to access these recordings logon to the Members only section of the SCAW website. The logon information is on your acknowledgement letter for membership. Please contact the SCAW office if you require additional information.
These recordings are intended to be an education tool for researchers, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) members, and government officials that will lead to more meaningful and appropriate applications of animal welfare laws in the context of fish and wildlife research and, in turn, to improve care and use of wild animals in fish and wildlife research.
The SCAW Newsletter includes topics such as: national polices, compliance, industrial concerns, biomedical research issues in all research animals, book reviews and information on national association meetings.
SCAW also has many Publications on the humane care and use of research animals, a few of which are listed below:
